The Society of Malaysian Contemporary Composers’ (SMCC) SoundBridge Festival is back again for another year of exciting concerts and premiere of new works! The festival will be held from 6th to 7th October at the Black Box, Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC) in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.
The festival will feature three concert events (Concert I, Concert II and Concert III), a panel discussion and a mini lecture-recital.
The first day of the festival will start of at 1pm with a mini lecture-recital by Daiske Kino-Shita from Japan. Daiske will be performing five solo flute works by different composers (one of which is his own composition), accompanied by his explanation of the various playing techniques that are involved in performing the works.
In “Concert I – Connecting Cities II” on the 6th October, 8pm, 9 compositions by composers from different cities: Germany, China, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines and Malaysia will be performed. Ho Chee Kong is the Singaporean representative in this concert with the world-premiere of his piece “Lights” for piano and percussion.
A panel discussion will take place in the morning of 7th October, at 10am. The panel discussion is entitled “The Trend of Cross-Media in Contemporary Music” and will feature panelists Koji Nakano (Japan), Otto Sidharta (Indonesia), Jean-David Caillouët (France), Zou Xiang Ping (China), Yii Kah Hoe (Malaysia), Wong Jyh Shyong (Malaysia) and Bernard Goh (Malaysia).
“Concert II – SoundBridge III” on 7th October, 4pm, is the heart of the festival, where 7 new works by 3 Malaysians and 4 South East Asian young composers will be premiered. The exciting factor of this concert is that each piece features a cross-media collaboration between contemporary music with traditional music, dance, modern dance, visual arts, painting, improvisation or live electronics. Singaporean-composer Erica Ngiam will be presenting her piece entitled “Globalization” for ensemble and painter, in collaboration with painter Ms Tjindra Peni.
The festival will end with the third concert, “Concert III – Malaysian Voices V” presenting 10 works written by Malaysian composers and performed by Malaysian musicians!
